SEGMENTS

Austin Votes To Restrict Developnemt / John Burnett

NPR's John Burnett reports on the landslide victory of a voter referendum limiting development near a prized local swimming hole. The victory is only the latest in a series of successful citizens’ environmental initiatives around the country that have rattled developers. (05:56)

Mexico's New Wave of Rural Electrification / Bebe Crouse

Bebe Crouse reports on the installation of a solar- and wind-powered electric system in a remote Mexican village. Mexico's electric company hopes the kinds of technology used in the village will help electrify the entire country within ten years — a process which the government estimates would take sixty years with conventional technology. (05:55)

Recycling Sewage in Brazil / Peter Thomson

Living on Earth's Peter Thomson reports on a pilot low-tech sewage treatment project in rural Brazil. The facility will use water hyacinths and other plants to clean nutrients out of wastewater, and local farmers will then use the plants as compost and cattle feed. (05:51)

Appropriate Technology: "Small is Beautiful."

Steve talks with Dan McCay of the Earth Island Institute's Appropriate Technology project about the benefits and challenges of small-scale, community-based development and infrastructure projects. (03:26)
